Model Description

The Leica M2-R combined the M2 viewing system with the rapid-loading arrangement developed for the M4. Its origins are connected with the KS-15(4) camera supplied for United States military use. The revised take-up mechanism allowed film to be inserted without removing and threading the separate M2 spool. Civilian cameras carrying the M2-R designation followed, with approximately 2,000 examples represented. The normal M2 finder and manually reset frame counter were retained, so the principal distinction was the quicker film-loading mechanism rather than a change to the rangefinder itself.
