Model Description

Introduced in 1932, the Leica II was the first production Leica with a rangefinder built into the camera and coupled mechanically to the lens. Turning the lens focusing control moved the rangefinder mechanism, allowing distance to be set without a separate accessory. The rangefinder and viewfinder still had separate optical windows and separate eyepieces. The camera retained the standardized Leica screw mount and cloth focal-plane shutter. This arrangement established the basic form of the Leica screw-mount rangefinder: interchangeable lenses, coupled focusing and a compact 35mm body.
