Model Description

The Leica I Model C introduced interchangeable lenses in 1930. The first examples did not yet have a universally standardized lens-to-film distance, so individual lenses were matched to particular camera bodies. Leitz subsequently standardized the mount, identified on contemporary equipment by a small zero mark. A standardized lens could then be transferred between compatible cameras without individual adjustment. The 39mm screw fitting became the basis of the Leica screw-mount system used on later I, II and III models. The Model C itself had no built-in rangefinder; focusing remained by scale or with an accessory rangefinder.
