Model Description

Presented publicly at the Leipzig Spring Fair in 1925, the Leica I Model A was the first Leica made in regular commercial production. It uses the 24 × 36mm format on 35mm film but has a fixed lens rather than an interchangeable mount. Various versions were fitted with Anastigmat, Elmax, Elmar and later Hektor lenses. Focusing was by distance scale or with a separate accessory rangefinder. The cloth focal-plane shutter provided speeds up to 1/500 second. The Model A established the compact body arrangement from which the later Leica screw-mount cameras developed.
